Our oldest art galleries are found in the limestone outcrops at Maungati, where you can view the incredible collection of ancient Maori Rock Art.
Maori Rock Art
An incredible collection of Maori rock art can be seen in the limestone outcrops at Maungati. Hundreds of years ago Maori artists painted the huge Te Manunui - the great bird - along with fish and moa.

Street Art
The District is home to some amazing public art. From the Bushman sculpture who sits quietly on Queen Street, to the many bright and colourful murals scattered around Waimate township.
The street art is sure to impress, and makes for some great photo opportunities.
Silo Art
Waimate is home to one of New Zealand’s largest pieces of street art, on the landmark Grain Silos.
Two good mates - Barry Sadler, of Transport Waimate Ltd, which owns the silos, and Waimate artist Bill Scott collaborated on the project to decorate the silos with murals celebrating the town’s past.
